Accommodation / Cedarberg & West Coast / Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve

Property Type: Lodge
Rating: Luxury
Star Grading: * * * * *

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Retreat is a heavenly wilderness reserve, a retreat of unparalleled beauty and recreational diversity, surrounded by thousands of acres of majestic, savage beauty of wind-sculpted landscape of reddish sandstone rock foundations.

This luxury ecological oasis was once the hunting ground of the Bushman, and the very cradle of humankind. Discover Cape Town's closest 5 star luxury lodge(270km north of Cape Town) set in the heart of the wilderness of the Western Cape, between the majestic Cederberg mountains and the vast open plains of the Great Karoo. This five-star lodge is a proud member of Relais & Chateaux, with 16 luxurious rooms and suites.

Offering a unique malaria-free, wilderness experience and a sanctuary for many indigenous plants, birds and animals, the reserve's carefully preserved San rock art sites also make it the world's 'largest open air art gallery'. Guided walks provide insight into the lives of the San, South Africa's earliest inhabitants who roamed this region during the Later Stone Age and today are recognised as one of the oldest civilisations of mankind.

At Bushmans Kloof over 130 rock art sites are located amidst overhanging cliffs and rocky shelters. The new Heritage Centre provides further insight into the history and lives of the San people through artefacts and photographic images, as well as the unique medicinal herb garden.

With no large predators, the property is a safe haven to many unique and some highly endangered species of plants and animals. There are over 35 species of mammals including Eland and Bontebok, as well as 29 Cape mountain zebra (currently numbered at only 1200 worldwide), and nocturnal animals like the rare Aardwolf and Smiths red rock rabbit. Over a 150 kinds of birds, including African fish eagle, Malachite kingfisher and Black harrier, as well as many species of water birds and indigenous ducks can be seen at Bushmans Kloof. More than 755 indigenous plant species thrive within this protected wilderness, including Bushmans Kloof's onw Cederberg Seven.

Fortifying their adventurous spirit with a range of exhilarating outdoor activities, guests may enjoy evening nature drives as well as hiking, mountain biking, archery, canoeing, fishing and swimming in crystal clear rock pools. Or be pampered with soothing spa treatments before relaxing on their private terraces or in their luxurious accommodation.

Indulge in a taste profusion of gastronomic or healthy, home-style comfort foods, whether under the African skies or at one of the lodge's stunning dining venues.
