Accommodation / Kenya & Tanzania / Loldia House

Property Type: Lodge
Rating: Luxury
Star Grading: * * * * *

At Loldia House, experience the life of Kenya's early settlers, the pioneers who first framed the rich highlands.

Loldia is set in manicured lawns, right on the shores of Lake Naivasha, the Great Rift Valley's highest and purest lake. Loldia House nestles under giant fig trees on one of the country's oldest farms, with breathtaking views of the dormant volcano, Mount Longonot.

Loldia House offers a choice of eight en-suite double bedrooms in the old family house and separate cottages; each has breathtaking views across Lake Naivasha. Loldia House, built in the Second World War, nestles under ancient Acacia trees. Lush lawns run down to the shores of Lake Naivasha, the Great Rift Valley's highest and purest lake. Indigenous plants and flowers fill the gardens. There are beautiful views of the dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. Wild animals roam free on the farm. Small antelope wander through the gardens. In the evenings hippo munch quietly by the waterside.

Guests staying at Loldia are offered a variety of activities to enjoy during their stay. Guests may visit Lake Nakuru National Park, the home of the greater and lesser flamingo. It is also the best place in Kenya to see black and white rhino as well as birds and other game. By foot or on horseback, guests can explore the farms 8 000 acres amongst herds of wild antelope and zebra. There is also fishing and bird-watching on Lake Naivasha and visits to nearby Hells Gate National park with its spectacular canyons, hot springs and wildlife.

The original character of the house has been kept: comfy chairs surround a huge fireplace; paintings by an artist who lives on the farm hang on the walls; a deep and shady veranda to relax on and sunbeds in the garden.

Mouth-watering meals, with fish and shrimp from the lake, are served under the trees or in the old dining room. Britain's Country Life Magazine even described Loldia's manager as "probably the best butler in the world".
