MORE ABOUT Namibia
...
The official language is English but Afrikaans, German and Kwanyama, an indigenous language, are widely spoken.
Namibia is still developing its own culinary identity. Most restaurants include a variety of modern Continental and traditional German and South African fare, with exotic accents like crocodile steaks, kudu, and other wild game on their menus.
The capital, Windhoek, is situated in the rolling hills of the central highlands. Its blend of colonial-German and modern-city architecture is best viewed on a stroll down Independence Avenue. Here the visitor will also find ostrich-skin and buffalo-hide leather goods, wood and stone carvings, handcrafted jewelry and karakul rugs.
Swakopmund is Namibia's premier holiday destination. It is a pleasant coastal resort and a good base from which to explore to the Cape Cross seal colony, the Namib Desert and Sandwich Harbour.
Other interesting excursions include the Rossing uranium mine and the wetlands of Walvis Bay, which supports in excess of 160 000 birds. Sea kayaking, paragliding and sandboarding are all popular activities in the vicinity. Highlights of southern Namibia include the awe-inspiring Fish River Canyon, a unique quiver tree forest and the majestic dunes of Sossusvlei. In the north, the most notable attraction is the shimmering Etosha Salt Pan in the Etosha National Park, a densely populated wildlife sanctuary and home to the largest black rhino population in Africa.
Other worthwhile areas to visit include the remote Skeleton Coast, the granite rock formations, paintings and engravings of the Damaraland, and the Caprivi, which is a region of rivers, narrow water channels and woodlands, quite unlike any other part of Namibia an a most interesting way of accessing the Victoria Falls as well as the game reserves of northern Botswana.
