The first recorded sighting of the islands of the Seychelles took place in 1505, by the Portuguese. As a transit point for trading Africa and Asia, they were occasionally used by pirates until the French began to take control of the islands starting in 1756, and then naming them after Jean Moreau de Sechelles, the then French finance minister.

about Seychelles
The 15 granitic and coralline islands of the Seychelles are home to some of the rarest and most exotic plant and animal life, such as the jellyfish tree and Coco-de-mer. The islands enjoy a tropical climate all year round and lie outside of the cyclonic belt. Between October and May the weather is hot and humid and the seas are calm. From May to September its drier and cooler, with rougher seas.
World Heritage Sites - Aldabra and the Vallee de Mai (once thought to be the Garden of Eden); sculpted granite boulders, coral reefs, untouched forests and bird sanctuaries - the Seychelles is as pure as it gets.
The largest island is Mahe, where 90% of the Seychelles population reside and houses the capital city of Victoria. The island is considered to have the most spectacular scenery of all the islands, with a high mountain range running the length of its 27 kilometers. There are 75 idyllic beaches on the island, quiet stretches of soft, palm-fringed sand, with warm clear seas.
Praslin located 37 kilometers north east of Mahe, 2 hours by boat or a 15 minute flight, Praslin is the second largest island of the Seychelles and home to the World Heritage Site of Vallee de Mai. This is the only place on earth that the rare coco de mer is found, the strangely shaped fruit was believed to be the fruit from the tree of knowledge by ancient philosophers, it was also claimed to have aphrodisiac properties. Praslin is a small island, just 10.5 by 4 kilometres but worth exploring, it has typically tropical scenery with beautiful coral reefs teeming with 900 species of fish. It is also home to three of the world's rarest birds, the Seychelles bulbul, fruit pigeon and the black parrot.
Denis Island, a 350 acre coral clay is situated on the edge of the Seychelles Bank, some 80 kilometers from Mahe or 30 minutes by air. The island is privately owned and has just one hotel. The island has rich tropical vegetation, prefect conditions for game fishing and varied wildlife, including a good population of wild tortoises. It is the perfect location for visitors seeking privacy, peace and relaxation.
Bird Island is located 96 kilometres from Mahe,a 30 minute flight or eight hours by boat. It is 150 metres long and 650 meters wide and lies on the edge of the Seychelles Bank, where the ocean drops suddenly to over 1000 fathoms, giving perfect conditions for big game fishing. The island is well known for its wildlife, specifically for its huge population (one and a half million) of sooty terns, which breed here between May and November. It's most revered resident is Esmeralda, the giant tortoise, reputed to be over 150 years old.
La Digue is the fourth largest and most frequently photographed of the islands. Accessible by boat or helicopter, approximately two and a half hours by boat from Mahe, and thirty minutes from Praslin. Time seems to have stood still here, local transportation is by ox-cart or by bicycle, take an excursion by ox-cart to see the stunning traditional homes and wide deserted beaches that are perfect for long walks, safe swimming, snorkeling and fishing. Silhouette, the third largest island is located thirty kilometers from Mahe and only accessible by helicopter. The island is perfect for walkers as there are no roads and many paths shaded by the equatorial forest.
Silhouette is covered with lush vegetation, palm trees and plantations of tobacco, coffee, cinnamon and avocados. The island was reputedly the home of the notorious pirate, Hodoul. Locals still believe that his secret treasure is buried here.
Alphonse, a small tropical island retreat is a one hour's flights from Mahe. The island has four kilometers of coastline protected by a reef and abundant marine life. Excellent for fly bone and big game fishing. North Island, a 'Robinson Crusoe' island, previously uninhabited for 30 years, recently sympathetically developed to accommodate a luxurious 12 villa resort. The island is easily reached by boat transfer from Mahe (approximately one hour) or by helicopter (2o minutes)
