This northwest province is home to the world-famous Taung skull that revolutionised scientific ideas about human evolution and is also home to some of South Africa's most interesting Bushman rock engraving sites.
These provinces offer everything from malaria-free big five game viewing to opulent luxury accommodation, fine dining and spa treatments. The North-West and Northern Provinces have economies on mining, tourism and agriculture.
The North-West is a major producer of maize, sunflower seeds, groundnuts and cattle, with mining primarily of diamonds, gold and platinum. The low-density populations in these two provinces speak predominantly Setswana in the North-West and Sepedi in the Northern Province.

More
about North West Province
An enormous, extravagant and opulent complex of hotel, gaming rooms, theatres, restaurants, bars, discos and shops, set in beautifully landscaped grounds, Sun City is a mecca for local and international holiday-makers - each year some two million people visit this unusual and exciting inland resort.
Accommodation ranges from the family-orientated Cabanas and the original Sun City Hotel, to the luxurious Cascades and the magnificence of the Palace of the Lost City - the ultimate indulgence.
Sun City, ever popular with the golfing fraternity, is home to two championship golf courses - the splendid Arizona desert-style Lost City course where crocodiles lie in wait at the 13th hole, and the Gary Player Country Club, host venue of the annual Million Dollar Golf Challenge.
The Superbowl, a massive venue next door to the country club, is a regular host of international beauty pageants, world championship boxing events and spectacular concerts.
Other leisure activities offered at the resort include tenpin bowling, horse riding, lawn bowls, tennis and squash, parasailing, waterskiing, jetskiing, pedal bumper and motorised boating on the giant manmade lake at Waterworld, and the Valley of the Waves, and outdoor playground incorporating waterfalls, slides, river rides, a beach and an enormous surf pool with artificially generated waves.
Attractions worth visiting, include the Kwena Gardens, a 'prehistoric' reptile park and crocodile ranch, the South African Birds of Prey Centre where daily flight demonstrations take place, and the Botanical Gardens, where a variety of habitats have been established that include rainforests, wetlands and even coastal vegetation.
Morning and afternoon game drives into the Pilanesberg National Park, mountain biking and hot air balloon safaris are all easily arranged.
The complex is well-equipped for families, with qualified staff who run a children's holiday programme, and amenities for children that include mini-golf, an aviary, an animal farm, a playground and a small mine where ?treasure? awaits discovery by eager hands and enquiring minds.
Sun City is on the southern fringe of the malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park, which sustains the world?s third largest white rhino population as well as the Big Five. This 580km2 park sprawls within four concentric mountain rings, relics of a 100 million year-old eroded volcano, with Mankwe Lake at its centre, rich in hippo and birdlife.
In excess of 10 000 head of game are to be found, among them black and white rhino, giraffe and zebra, lion, cheetah, leopard, brown hyena, elephant, warthog and a wealth of antelope. More than 300 bird species have been identified and the aviary at Manyane gate is well worth a visit.
The park's celebrated wild dog programme is also open to visitors, and is best viewed at feeding time when an antelope carcass is deposited in the large enclosure for these fascinating, protected animals.
A unique manner of game viewing is offered in the park - serene hot air balloon safaris followed by a hearty breakfast at a luxury lodge. Accommodation in the park ranges from the most basic of chalets to the luxury of the flagship Tshukudu Bush Lodge.
On the main vein running between Johannesburg, Sun City and the capital of Botswana, Gabarone, lies the rich, red earth of the Madikwe Game Reserve. These 75 000ha of malaria-free bushveld offer wonderful game viewing including the Big Five, diverse birdlife with more than 300 recorded species to date, as well as rich flora and geology. The reserve is easily accessible via scheduled daily flights from Lanseria Airport, or a 3.5 hour drive.
Even closer to Johannesburg, a mere 2.5 hour drive north of the metropolis or 45 minutes by private air charter, lies the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve, a 36 000ha wilderness area in the malaria-free Waterberg biosphere of the Limpopo (or Northern) Province. Here, Shibula Lodge offers accommodation of the utmost luxury, along with a bush spa, fine wines and indigenous flavours, set against the dramatic landscape of bushveld accentuated by mountains and forests.
