DID YOU KNOW?
The western side of the province lies the more sedate Waterberg massif. Once a sphere of cattle farming and hunting, the area in the last two decades has altered into a region dedicated to wildlife conservation, becoming a UNESCO Biosphere and - unlike the eastern part - offers malaria-free Big-Five game viewing.

Tailor-made Limpopo Province holidays

Although the Limpopo Province (Northern Province) seems to take a second place to its southern neighbour, Mpumalanga in the safari stakes, many believe that the northern region has so much more to offer with the less crowded and wilder part of the Kruger National Park into it. It is named after the great Limpopo River that flows along its northern border. This province is rich in wildlife, spectacular scenery and a wealth of historical and cultural treasures.

The Limpopo Province is sparsely populated, with many interesting cultural destinations. You could visit the sacred grove of cycads, which have been guarded by the queen of the Lobedu people for centuries. And, deep in the forests of Venda, a sacred lake holds unfathomable secrets. Young girls dance snake-like to the beat of a sacred drum and large forests jealously guard their sacred trees.

More about Limpopo Province

But its not all myth and magic. There are some very tangible attractions. Wildlife sanctuaries … sparkling trout waters … hot mineral springs … the Limpopo Province is a source of endless fascination. Nowadays, vast plantations of coffee, tea and citrus cover the northern areas as you cross the Tropic of Capricorn. Much of the landscape is lovingly preserved in private nature reserves, including wilder portions of the world famous Kruger National Park. The Olifants River, which flows into the Park, is a fantastic white water river and you can join a day trip or an overnight excursion. The hiking is fantastic too, taking you through large tracts of indigenous forest.

Near Tzaneen, beautiful rivers flow through fantastic afromontane forests, while a whole range of wonderfully delicious tropical fruits grows in the valleys.

Unspoilt wilderness areas contrast with modern, sophisticated resorts and cities in a land of legend and romance.
